The name Kathleen comes from the Greek root name Kathleen, meaning "pure."
Kathleen Dawson, or Kathie (as she preferred to be called), will always be remembered as a spirited individual with pure passion for many things: the arts, the environment, her Christianity and her children.
Kathie was born on September 3, 1929 (star sign Virgo). A proud Canadian, Kathie lived to witness many great events, beginning with the Stock Market Crash of 1929 through to the modern-day wonders of the 21st Century.
Whether it was her Scottish heritage (being of the clan McKinley) or living through the tough years of the Great Depression, Kathie believed in responsible and frugal living. This, however, did not stop her from being generous with friends and family.
While Kathie was both a woman of her generation - becoming a wife and mother at an early age in the 1950s - she was also a fierce advocate for women's rights. Prior to marrying William Russell Hetherington, Kathie worked as an Executive Secretary for the company that makes Maxwell House coffee. Kathie was always proud of holding that job and enjoyed drinking that coffee, always black, throughout her life.
Kathie recalled with great fondness how her brother Sandy, a former WWII fighter pilot, walked her down the aisle.
Following her marriage, Kathie gave birth to five children: Janet, Debra, Bill, Wendy and Jamie. Sadly, Wendy and Jamie predeceased their mother. However, Kathie expressed her pleasure at seeing her surviving children go on to fulfilling lives.
Kathie was also delighted to having two grandchildren: Alex (Debra's son) and Jake (Bill's son).
Kathie strongly supported education and encouraged creativity. A landscape painter herself who often signed her paintings "Kathy," Kathie was proud of Debra's art works. Janet's writing, Bill's skill at computers, Jake's studies in French immersion (she thought French was very romantic!) and Alex's culinary abilities.
Some years after Kathie's first husband passed away from heart failure, Kathie remarried and became the wife of Ernest Dawson. Kathie survived Ernie too, after he lost a long fight with lung cancer.
When her children "left the nest" to pursue their own lives, families and careers, Kathie thoroughly enjoyed her independence. She loved her apartment in Brantford and watching television - especially current events, history and nature shows. She particularly enjoyed Criminal Minds. Kathie loved reading as well, surrounding herself with poetry, fiction and non-fiction, and especially liked science fiction.
Kathie came to have some dear friends in George (Bill) and Donna Wagner, who lived in her apartment complex.
Kathie believed passionately in preservation of the environment for future generations, and wrote to Dr. David Suzuki on the subject.
Kathie was also a devout Christian, and found great comfort in her faith. She believed in the teachings of Jesus, and the divine benevolence of angels above and on Earth.
Kathie passed peacefully at Brantford General Hospital on February 1, 2012.
im sorry for your loss. though i didnt know her well , your mom was a wonderful person. our thoughts are with you in this tough time
