Obituary of Richard Archer

ARCHER, Richard Bryan (Dick) January 22, 1943 – January 5, 2024 It is with great sadness that we announce Dick’s passing on January 5, 2024, at 80 years of age. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. Dick was the loving husband, best friend, and life partner of 58 years to Joan W. Archer (Cameron). Privileged and proud father of Scott (Betty), Jennifer (Jim Bergsma), Shannon (Felix Stasevicius), and Michael. Dick was so pleased to be doting Grandpa to Emily, Duncan, Max and Doug; Matthew and Jordan; Patrick and Andrew. Brother of Rodger (Dawn). Brother-in-law of Ruth Henricks and Bob Cameron (Grazyna). He was predeceased by his parents Everett and Joan Archer, and brother-in-law Don Cameron (Joanne). Born in Summerside PEI, Dick was raised in Brantford Ontario, and lived most recently in Simcoe Ontario. He graduated from Pauline Johnson CVS, Hamilton Teachers’ College, and the Ontario College of Education in Toronto (Technical Trades). He taught Industrial Arts at Grandview and Centennial Public Schools, retiring in 1998. He was a dedicated educator and one of his proudest accomplishments was the enrolment of boys and girls equally into Industrial Arts and Home Economics classes. He and Joan designed and constructed two energy efficient, earth-sheltered homes in Brant County. Dick was always eager to share about the benefits of earth-sheltering and details of what it was like to live “underground”. Dick was a member of Langford Community Church, where he cherished the many close friendships that developed over 45 years of involvement. He enjoyed travelling, including camping trips with friends and family across Canada and the United States, as well as the years spent at the trailer park in Port Dover. A travel highlight was the beautiful European river cruise with Joan. Over the years he enjoyed playing trumpet and string bass, spinning stories with the Brant Taletellers Guild, and the time he served as a councillor with Brantford Township. The family would like to extend special thanks to all the PSWs and others who enabled Dick to remain comfortable and as independent as possible in his home. It meant so much to him to be able to live life where he most wanted to be, and he was quick to share how wonderful they all were. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation at the Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Ave., Brantford, 519-752-4331 on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Thursday January 11th at 1:00 p.m. If desired, memorial donations to Langford Community Church or Parkinson Canada would be appreciated. “There’s the problem: you’ve got the wrong-handed hammer. Go to the tool cupboard and switch hammers, and the nails will go in perfectly.” A tree will be planted in memory of Dick in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
