David George Humber Obituary
David George Humber, 91, of Brantford, died peacefully on Sunday, July 7th, 2024, at Fox Ridge Care Community.
Born in Shepherds Bush, London, England on March 20, 1933, David began his National Service in the British Army in 1951, immediately enlisting as a career soldier in the Coldstream Guards. Rising quickly to the rank of Sargent, David had the honour of being on guard at both the funeral of King George V as well as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as serving in Egypt and Kenya. Proud of this service, he was never short of stories of his time overseas and could often be heard watching military marches on his iPad.
After his service, David trained as a Remedial Gymnast and began his second career at a rehabilitation center and general hospital in Mansfield, UK. It was here he met Pamela, his partner-in-life for 65 years.
David, Pamela, and their young family immigrated to Canada in 1969, when David took a position in the physiotherapy department of the Brantford General Hospital. He was an integral part of this team until retirement in 1995. He favoured his work in palliative care and put his wry humour to work to disguise critical breathing exercises during his famous “One O’clock Class”. His interest in palliative care led him back to school, and he received a B.A. from McMaster University in 1983.
David is survived by Pamela, their children Rich (Christa Yoshimoto) and Claire (John Carter), grandchildren Max (Maggie Cheung) and Sunny (Rob McLaren), and great-grandson George.
A loyal friend, David was known for his dry humour and curious intellect. But above all else, David lived for his family. Nothing brought him more pleasure than his children and grandchildren, and their respective partners, of whom he was known to remark how glad he was that they had so seamlessly become “Humber’s”. The joy brought by the arrival of his great-grandson at the end of his life is immeasurable: the Christmas gift that kept on giving, David’s face would light up with every mention, picture, and visit from George.
The family would like to thank the Forest Grove team at Fox Ridge Care Community: your patience, kindness and support was very, very much appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Grace Anglican Church on Saturday, August 24th at 11:30 am.
