Obituary of Michael O'Hagan
Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
O'Hagan, Michael - It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our dear Michael passed away peacefully, with his loving wife at his side, at the Stedman Hospice in Brantford on Monday, March 4th, 2024 at the age of 79. Beloved husband of Julie (née Postuszny) for 56 years. Cherished father of Sean (Yuu) and Kathleen (Gerry). Adoring grandfather of Max and Jake, and much-loved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Survived by loving siblings, Edmond (Mary Catherine), Diane (Gérald), and Patrick (Marilyn). Predeceased by devoted parents Fred and Simonne (neé St. Marseille).
From childhood to adulthood, Michael spent most of his summers at one of his favourite places, the family “camp” on Rock Lake, where he enjoyed swimming, waterskiing, fishing, and socializing with family and friends. He’d often express how much he loved his time there with a spontaneous “Que c’est beau la vie au chalet!” He also loved playing his guitar and serenading us with songs by various artists, from Gordon Lightfoot to Irish favourites. As the song goes, his Irish eyes were always smiling.
Throughout his career, Michael was a dedicated educator — first as an English teacher/Master Teacher of English and later as Vice-Principal. Soon after retirement, Michael and Julie bid a fond farewell to Sudbury — the city where they met, were married, and raised their children — and moved to Paris (ON), and then Brantford, to be closer to family. During this time, Michael enjoyed hobbies like reading, photography, golf, indulging in fine wines, and travelling to places as far away as Japan. But there was nothing that brought him more joy than his grandsons, Max and Jake. He loved chatting with them, reading to them, and playing with them, often becoming a “big kid” himself when in their presence.
Always a charmer, Michael first approached the lovely, young Julie at the Sudbury Public Library, where she couldn’t resist his beautiful blue “St. Marseille eyes.” Throughout their marriage, Michael could be heard saying loving things to his wife up until his final days. He loved those that were dear to him with all his heart, and was liked and respected by all who met him.
Friends and loved ones will be received at the Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre for Michael’s Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at 1:00 pm. A Service of Remembrance will be held in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. As per his request, cremation has taken place. Donations to the Stedman Community Hospice or the Alzheimer Society Foundation (Brant) in Michael’s name would be appreciated.
A tree will be planted in memory of Michael in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
