Condolences
Art was the only minister I truly trusted and respected. His words were full of wisdom. When I think of Art I see him rushing down the church aisle, face beaming, robes billowing out behind him, as he engaged everyone in his message from God. I loved this man. Be at peace ❤️
I got to work with Art when he ran for Parliament in the Brant riding in 1979. I was part of his team and loved associating with Art and Joy. Their remarkable energy and infectious enthusiasm was inspiring
A fine man, dedicated to doing good in the community. I have many fond memories of Arthur Tobey.
Soon after meeting my future husband, John, at Toronto Bible College, I met his older brother, Art, who asked me to find out if Joy Martin would like to go out with him! For the next 3 years, we often double-dated, and Art and Joy were married 5 weeks after us in 1960.
We served the Kenilworth Pastoral Charge while Art and Joy served Holstein, so the brothers travelled the remaining distance together to Waterloo College [later Waterloo Lutheran University] each day.
Our young families grew very close, even spending camping vacations together. We accompanied Art and Joy, Martin and Paul as they moved to Nova Scotia, Art driving the
big red camping vehicle that he had recently converted, stopping to visit Expo '67 along the way.
As their younger brothers married, had families, and moved, we always continued to gather for Christmas, Grandpa's birthday [conveniently July 1], and many other occasions. As always, I recognized Art's leadership skills as he often directed his brothers in their proceedings within the family!
Throughout the years I've known him, Art's perceptive ability has become more and more obvious to me, and I've grown to appreciate and love Art as the big brother I always wished I had!
I'll miss him, as will everyone, but we know that he has gone on to a Far Better Place where we will be ''forever with our Lord'' if we have invited Christ to be our Saviour!
My condolences and prayers are with Karen, Martin, Paul, and Heather, and their families at this time!
I'm writing on behalf of my mother, Ruth Graham, who was a longtime member of Colborne Street United Church. She wants to offer her sympathy to the Tobey family. Our family was honoured to have Mr. Tobey officiate at the weddings of three of Ruth and Don's daughters -- Barbara in 1972, Linda in 1973 and Jean in 1975. His presence will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
I first met Art when he was ministering at Colborne and my grandma, Clara Smith, attended there. She loved Rev. Tobey. How pleased I was to become part of the church family at Oakland Scotland and find Art once more. He was an inspiration to all of us, a true man of God and his encouragement and leadership led us always to the Light of the world. Art, you will be sorely missed and we will endeavour to carry on your good work.

Our family has fond memories of Art and Joy's Ministry at Appleby United in Burlington and being invited several times out to their home for the chilli suppers and jazz concerts. Our son was in the youth group during that time and commented recently he vividly remembers Art taking the youth group to the nearby arena to skate and how "smooth" Art was on his skates !
Sending our sympathies to Karen and each of the family members. Wishing you each the blessings of many many good memories.
Sincerely Lynda and Ron Holmes and family.
I first met Arthur Tobey when I was a teenager attending Colborne Street United Church. It was a warm summer evening and some of the Youth from Colborne were outside waiting to see our new minister, when along came a man who asked us if this was Colborne Street United Church. We said yes. He then began to go into the church and we told him him he could not go in because there was a meeting going on to select our new minister. He said, well that would be me. We looked at each other and in he went. A few weeks later he was standing in the pulpit of our church. The Tobey family had a great impact for me in my teen years and beyond. I looked after their kids when Art and Joy had to go out. Joy and I spent some time working at the "Brant San" on the midnight shift, and Art encouraged me to hear God's call to ministry for my life. Through the years and 42 years later I am grateful to Art, Joy, Martin, Paul and Heather for the wonderful years they were a significant part of my life.
Our sincerest sympathies to the Tobey family. Art played a part in our lives as we started out. He married us 43 years ago and babtized our children, Amanda(Mandy) and Kevin. Although we have not had much contact over the last years, we do remember our times with the Youth Group and Dave as an Elder at Colborne United Church. I remember Art coming to visit residents at Park Lane Terrace during the years I worked there & briefly reconnecting. He was a wonderful man & will be truly missed.
We are thinking of you;

Karen,my thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve the loss of Art. You have happy memories to comfort you as ou reflect and treasure the time you had with Art.

For many years the Tobey family was intertwined with my parents, Bob and Miriam Milburn. Lovingly, the connection was through Bethel Stone United Church, Five Oaks Christian Workers Centre, and musical events of many kinds. So it is with gratitude that I extend my sympathy to Karen Tobey and family for strong connections which also extend to the Dyment and Pottruff clans. It was my pleasure to reconnect with Karen and with Art’s family at the Stedman Community Hospice. May peace be with you in your grief.
Sincerely, Sylvia Milburn-McIver
From best friends' father, to boss, to second father, to friend, Art had a profound impact on my life for about 6 years. He and Joy welcomed us wayward teens into their home and family with no - okay "few" - questions asked. I've known few nicer people in my life and it was with great sadness I heard of Art's passing. Many fond - and not so fond - memories of my years with PAM Moving.
Our condolences to Martin, Paul and Heather and their families. And to Karen, although we only met you once, you and Art seemed very happy and we are so sorry for your loss.
