Obituary of Katharina Huempfner

Katharina (Kathe) Huempfner The angels came for Mom on Monday morning and carried her to her home in Heaven. Peacefully in her sleep Monday, August 14, 2023, just days before her 96th birthday celebration she left this earth and graduated to glory. It is with a deep sense of loss that the family announces her passing. Devoted wife to predeceased Hans Huempfner, caring mother and beloved Grandmother and Oma and Great-Great Oma. Kathe was born on August 20, 1927, in Mucsi, Hungary, only daughter of Melchior and Therese (Berger) Gommermann, sister to two older brothers Joseph and Stephan both predeceased. Kathe leaves her 2 daughters, Elfie and Helene (Andrew), along with 6 Grandchildren, Tanya (Glenn), Angela, Rose, John, Kris (Monica) and Shannon and 12 Great-Grandchildren, Brenden, Tristen, Trinity (Talon), Tobias, Brianna, Karis, Olivia, Kaidence, Zoey, Nathan, Rayne, and Lailah and one Great-Great-Grandchild Maeve. Kathe was born in a little town of Mucsi, in Tolna County, Hungary, where she lived with her parents until the age of 16 when she along with the majority of Germans became war refugees and displaced persons as they were forcefully evacuated out of their homes in Hungary due to WW2 and lost everything. This haunted her for many years, until she realized that it was in fact a blessing in disguise and thanked God for bringing her to freedom. Those that managed to stay behind experienced persecution and prejudice and ultimately lived under communistic rule until the Iron Curtain came down. Those that became refugees as Kathe, settled in various neighboring countries. Ultimately, in Germany she met the man she would marry, due to her brother Joe’s friendship with him and after a very short courtship they married in February 1948. That same year they became parents and not long after received their immigration paperwork for Canada, thanks to the sponsorship from her brother Joseph already residing in Canada with his family. In October 1954 after a rough sea voyage due to Hurricane Hazel, they disembarked the Arosa Kulm, in Canada with their first daughter Elfie, and Kathe’s elderly Father. And the rest as they say is history. The family will celebrate her homegoing with friends at the Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre on Saturday, August 19th at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will follow at Beckett-Glaves after the Committal at Oakhill Cemetery.
