Obituary of Bernard Cubitt

Please share a memory of Bernard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
“Bernard “Bernie” Cubitt passed suddenly in his 65th year. Bernie has been lovingly described as “a downtown guy,” his regular presence is missed by many in his neighbourhood. Bernie was a hardworking and private person, who leaves a legacy of generosity and kindness. Bernie lived a spiritual life and attended many church services in the city. Bernie spent time volunteering at the churches, and loved to give back, sharing meals with others filled him with pride. From Dave C.: “Bernie was a regular presence at both Freedom House and The Kindness Centre. When we hear of his passing ... the word that many who got to know him was, “sweet.” Bernie had all the reasons in the world to lose that sweetness, but you could always count on a smile and a joke from him. On his good days, and tough ones, his character shone through.” From Donna K.: “During the time that I spent with Bernie, some of his favorite things to enjoy were....concerts and plays at the Sanderson Centre, music and events at Harmony Square, donating items to St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, grocery shopping made him really happy, just walking around the city made him happy and every spring he would enjoy pancake breakfasts with his friends at various venues in Norfolk County. Bernie was also a home body, we often just enjoyed good conversation and a visit together." Bernie loved going to Port Dover, renting a cottage with friends and more recently a private cottage run by a very special lady, Connie. Connie welcomed all with open arms and genuinely enjoyed having Bernie stay. Bernie has been going to Port Dover for many years and considered it his home away from home. We would go out for coffee sometimes, Mary and Dave at the "Coffee Shop " would always greet Bernie by name. Bernie had recently begun to wonder what it would look like for him to move to Port Dover when he was ready to retire. Bernie would also attend church services during his time in Port Dover. Bernie was employed by Community Living Brant as a custodian for many years, he was so very proud of his employment there. Occasionally we would talk about plans for retirement, Bernie would just smile and say " I will let you know when I am ready ". Bernie was very self directive and knew exactly what his life plan was, occasionally he would share some of his plan in conversation. He will truly be missed.” Bernie was loved by many.” Friends are invited to Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre, 88 Brant Ave. on Tuesday, November 10th 2020 from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. A Memorial Service for Bernie will take place in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. A tree will be planted in memory of Bernie in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
