Obituary of James "Jim" Dougherty
Please share a memory of James "Jim" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James (Jim) Dougherty passed away peacefully on May 19, 2016, in his 90th year, with his beloved wife Flora by his side. He was much loved and will be sorely missed by his daughters, Cathy (Paul), Jill (Dino) and Carol (Mike), his grandchildren, Lisa, Amelia, Georgia, Alec and Claudia, his sister, Penny Bampton, and his sisters -in -law, Doris Martin and Isobel Anderson. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, Jack (Shirley), Ruth (Scott), Joan (Luis), Barry (Penny), Glenn (Jeannie) and Craig (Monique). Jim was born in 1927 and raised in Outremount, Montreal, spending his summers at the family cottage in Otterburn Park with the many Dougherty aunts, uncles and cousins. As a young man, Jim worked in Montreal's garment industry and then at Combustion Engineering before joining Northern Electric and working in the electrical distribution industry for over 40 years, first as a travelling salesman in the Gaspé, then as a branch manager in Trois-Rivières and eventually in various senior executive positions in Northern Electric, Nedco, SpanCan , Steetley Industries and Guillevin International. Jim spotted Flora on the dance floor during a summer vacation in the Laurentians and never looked back. They married soon after and spent 59 happy years together. Even into their 80's, Jim and Flora could still clear a dance floor when they jived. Jim was a devoted husband and father, loving to go on family ski vacations in the Laurentians, paddle at the cottage, fish with Flora on the French River and celebrate special occasions, always with great food and wine, thoughtfully remembering and buying each family member's favourite candies and chocolates . Jim was a foodie before it was fashionable, always knowing the best restaurants and generously treating friends and family to dine. Jim never missed choosing a special perfume for Flora and each of his daughters and grandchildren every single Christmas, also adding his sons-in-law to the list as the family grew. Jim seemed to know how to build or fix anything, perfectly. He tackled ambitious landscaping and home renovation projects himself and accumulated a large enough collection of tools to stock a small hardware store. Jim was a doting husband, father and grandfather, supportive of Flora and their daughters and grandchildren in everything they did and endlessly proud of their accomplishments. He had the rare quality of giving encouragement and praise instead of advice. Jim was loved and admired by his many friends and family, who were lucky to have been part of his long and wonderful life. Jim was a shining example of what it means to be a good husband, father, grandfather and man. Friends will be received at the BECKETT-GLAVES FAMILY FUNERAL CENTRE, 88 Brant Avenue on Tuesday from 7-9 and Wednesday from 12-1 pm. A Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Reverend Stephen Iverson officiating. Cremation. Donations to the Brantford General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Donations, condolences and live funeral web-casting will be available online at www.beckettglaves.com. A tree will be planted in memory of Jim in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest.
